Steven Holl has been awarded the 2010 Jencks Award: Visions Built at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). The Jencks Award is given annually to an individual that has recently made a major contribution simultaneously to the theory and practice of architecture internationally.

Charles Jencks states, “Steven Holl has divided his time between writing and architecture. This two-way traffic between theory and practice has led to the considered development of several themes, which work on different scales. For smaller commissions, houses and chapels, he has explored a tightly layered and faceted aesthetic based on light studies – direct, oblique and reflected colors that play over intricate surfaces. This research is furthered through his watercolors and writings on phenomenology - both a form of theoretical investigation. From them comes a haptic architecture, related to that of Carlo Scarpa, and one that engages many senses, not just the visual. At the large scale Holl investigates more conceptual and systematic models, such as structural and scientific ideas of porosity or the fractal known as Menger’s Sponge. Here his urban work in the USA and China creates formal order at several scales, and is tied to social ideas of passage, meeting and communal well-being. Color, light and phenomenology also inform his city buildings and together with his domestic architecture, writing and watercolor, form a consistent body of work that is as rare as it is impressive.'

The award will be presented at the RIBA on 30 November 2010, followed by a public lecture by Steven Holl, chaired by Charles Jencks.

The Jury is of the opinion that the design selected in the Architectural Competition has every chance of becoming one of the most important features of the Gdańsk City Centre from the very beginning. In our belief it meets all conditions of joining in the sophisticated symbols in the future alongside the Armoury, St Mary’s Church, or the Crane.

The huge building tactfully merges in the neighbourhood sharing the chance of becoming an icon of Gdańsk with the major historic elements around. The minimalist means of architectural expression proposed by the authors gracefully blend the modern idea of the building with the historic background. In its Design, the innovative, huge-scale project makes use of the unique air of the city and transforms it in a modern manner. The colour and texture proposed in the design smoothly blend with the colours of Gdańsk giving the museum the power to pass the test of the 21.c century.

The design embraces an immense building, which serves varied purposes. Dynamic, huge in scale, the building carries an air of a sculpture created by the visitors. It rises symbolically from the ground, led by light, bold, Simple, and naked, symbolically placed in the geometry of the shipyard. It links the ground – its gloom, chill, and imprint of the Past, with the skies – hope, freshness, and Future. In this ingenious design, a rational vision of a public facility meets the wealth of history. It rings full sound, telling a story hard to chew for any generation, the story we must never forget. The attractive body of the building cumulates emotions, portrays the terror of war without depriving us of hope. It does not leave its interpreters buried in the gloom of the difficult topic.

The elegant pavilion, together with the obelisk nearby, squeezes into the ground and strikes the viewer with light, creating a symbol of catastrophe and the surviving hope. Phoenix-like, the building rises from Mother Earth, its ashes, towards the sky. The building will easily imprint itself on the visitors minds, conveying and being an unforgettable experience, both due to its interior and exterior. It will become a major feature on the plan of Gdańsk, perfectly composed in space.

The well-organised and modern building combines an immense range of functions . It offers huge space for permanent exhibitions, while remaining open for any displays in the future. The visitors to and the residents of the Tri-City will love it as an attraction. The designed tower will play a major role in gaining an image of the entire city, offering a fresh perspective view of Gdańsk, which will enhance the Museum’s valuable function of a viewing point.

As a public space, the Museum Has the potential of a meeting place for families, tourists, and acquaintances, of taking in dozens of cars. It incorporates an ingenious concept with functionality.

This exceptionally designed Museum of the Second World War will become a major attraction, telling the story of paramount importance for the humanity. It will grow to become a timeless symbol inscribed in the hearts of the people of Gdańsk, Poland, and Europe.

Danish architects C. F. Møller have won a competition to design a new ferry terminal in Stockholm, Sweden.

The terminal will service Stockholm’s ferry connection to Finland and the Baltics.

The massing of the new building is inspired by traditional maritime architecture and its exterior will be clad in expanded mesh.

The new terminal will form part of Norra Djurgårdsstaden, a residential and commercial development in the Stockholm city suburb Hjorthagen.

Click above for larger image

The terminal will be raised to the same height as the neighbouring development and linked to it via a bridge.

The roof of the terminal will be landscaped to become a public green space and embedded with solar cells to generate power for the self-sufficient structure.

Click above for larger image

Here’s some more from the architects:

New terminal for Stockholm’s permanent ferry connections to Finland and the BalticsThe new terminal for Stockholm’s permanent ferry connections to Finland and the Baltics will be a landmark for the new urban development Norra Djursgårdsstaden – both architecturally and environmentally.

Click above for larger image

The terminal, which will have a facade covered with expanded mesh, recalls the shape of a moving vessel and the architecture – with large cranes and warehouses – that previously characterized the ports.

Click above for larger image

At the same time, the terminal has an ambitious sustainable profile, characteristic of the entire development.

Click above for larger image

The main idea has been to create natural links between central Stockholm and the new urban area in connection with the terminal, so that city life will naturally flow into the area.

Click above for larger image

Therefore the terminal is raised to be at level with the urban zone, so it is easy for both pedestrians and traffic to access.

Click above for larger image

At the same time the roof of the terminal building is designed as a varied green landscape with stairs, ramps, niches, and cosy corners, inviting both Stockholmers and passengers for a stroll or relaxing moments, while enjoying the view of the ferries, the archipelago, and the city skyline.

The aim is that the ferry terminal will be predominantly self-sufficient in energy and thus stand as an environmental model for public construction.

Therefore the architecture of the terminal will integrate i.e. solar and wind power, for example the terraced landscape on the roof will integrate beds of solar cells along with the planting.

Click above for larger image

The plan is to communicate the sustainable efforts to the people in the building by using i.e. centrally placed television screens, helping to raise awareness of the potential of sustainable construction.

The concept A.WAY by Berlin-based J. Mayer H. Architects has been announced the Winner at the Audi Urban Future Award - Building a Vision for 2030. The award aims to establish a dialogue on the synergy of mobility, architecture and urban development by means of a tangible view into the future, without losing sight of the perspective of the Audi brand as an automobile manufacturer. At the heart of the award process was a competition between six internationally renowned architectural firms: J. Mayer H. Architects, Alison Brooks Architects, BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group, Cloud 9, standardarchitecture and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.
A.WAY Concept Statement by J. MAYER H.

Once upon a time, around 1985, the world discovered the ozone hole and it changed the way we think about our future. From now on, consumption, production and mobility are at stake. With the introduction of digital technologies in the early 21st century based on electricity as the main source for energy supply, our cities will grow free of pollution and congestion; green, clean, quiet and efficient.

J. Mayer H. Architects

Visions of the future have always been a place of speculation for mobility. The 20th century proposed playful and even sometimes naive visions of flying cars and underwater urban settings. Novel ways of flying around galaxies, journeying to the centre of the earth, diving into submarine worlds, traveling through time, jumping through universes, teletransporting, injecting into and voyaging through the blood stream of a human body populated our visions of the future. Maybe, in the long term, we will experience these magical modes of transportation. Yet the short-term future might be invisible first.

J. Mayer H. Architects

Individual mobility of the future will strongly be linked to the developments of digitally augmented urban spaces, automated driving and personalized data exchange between the human body and its environment. Traffic will be a constant flow, with no more need for parked vehicles. Pedestrian areas will regain their lost space from cars.

Repercussions will be seen on a social, economic and ecological level. Surveillance technologies will transform the city and its inhabitants into a flow of data, blurring the boundaries between body, car and architecture.

J. Mayer H. Architects

New forms of perception will arise from digital technologies. They will allow for each one of us to selectively allow or reject individual aspects of the city. The car will transform from being a viewing machine for maneuvering in traffic towards a sensorial experience machine. Driving through the city will put our senses and sensibilities into the foreground and allow us to interact with the urban context in completely new ways.

And there is always the option of a collapse of all systems that might come as a surprise, keep us going, force us to improvise, invent and move ahead. If at that point cities have proved once more to be flexible, adjustable, able to transform and survive, then we will live under a protecting ozone layer again, happily ever after.

"A DRIVING MACHINE BECOMES A VIEWING MACHINE. THAT MEANS THAT THE OCCUPANT CAN EXPERIENCE THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY, INDEPENDENTLY OF WHETHER THE CAR IS MOVING OR HAS TO STOP OR BRAKE. WHAT WE ARE ADVOCATING IS CLEANSING THE CITY OF ALL OF THE TOOLS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TODAY IN ORDER TO MAKE INDIVIDUAL MOBILITY WITHIN THE CITY POSSIBLE." Jürgen Mayer H.

Athens-based firm architecture 112 have shared with us their entry "Horologion" that won the team a Commendation at the Greek competition Piraeus Tower 2010 – Changing the Face/Façades Reformation, organized by DUPONT and greekarchitects.gr.

architecture 112 are Stavros Martinos and Aris Ntalas, and project collaborators were Giannis Giannoutsos, Alexia Katsakiori and Vassiliki Gialia.
North Sundial

The Piraeus Tower was erected on the site of a 19th century Clock building that used to be a significant point of reference for the city and its inhabitants. The memory of this demolished landmark has not yet faded out entirely. In order to restitute its presence, we suggest the redesign of the Tower façade as a system of urban sundials.

Click above image to view slideshow
South Sundial

This way, the reminiscence of the old Clock will be activated on site, in order to enhance the landmark quality of the Piraeus Tower – not only in terms of size, but also in terms of character, through site-specific history.

Night South View

Sundials are landscape elements with infinite design potential: They are objects whose form encodes information such as geographic latitude, the angle of the sun towards the earth surface, and the four points of orientation. The shared ability to read the code in a particular sundial may contribute significantly to a sense of collective identity, and this is why sundials are often placed in prominent places at historical cities or sites.

Click above image to view slideshow
Horologion, Perspective

The transcription of the sundial device into architecture brings out features such as time, sunlight, shadow, and its gradations during the day. The formerly solid and disproportionate mass of the old tower is divided into four convex faceted volumes that may assume the function of sundial during each of the year’s four seasons. Time, during the day, is read through the shadow the tower casts upon its own self. Specifically, each of the volumes is formulated into connected triangular faces, so that each time a convenient edge may act as gnomon upon the reclining face below. Every face will be shaded differently in the course of time, every day of the year. As a result, the massive building will have an ever changing appearance, but in a way that remains meaningful to the city.

Click above image to view slideshow
Elevations

The analemmatic sundial formulated on the top corner of the tower facing North will be easily discernible, since its projection surface will be the only edge to receive a cast shadow. The rest of the edges will remain shaded in different tones of darkness. The same effect will appear on the bottom corner of the tower facing South, where the sundial becomes vertical.

Click above image to view slideshow
General Plan Horizontal Sundial

The required additional staircase is shaped into a tall pointed element that casts its shadow upon the surrounding cityscape, acting as gnomon of a horizontal dial. Casts of this latter gnomon edge upon the city may be explicitly marked by a network of urban elements, placed at the proper locations across Piraeus.

The architectural form resulting from such an idea looks cutting edge, and yet remains primitive in essence.

Section

Program

The Piraeus Tower is a typical office and retail building, with a cafeteria over the suspended socle and a restaurant on the top floor. The intervals between the four proposed volumes are meant to remain vacant, and occasionally house public uses, open to the city. The additional staircase and elevator will connect the surface of the city through the terrace to the public floors cutting through the body of the building.

Click above image to view slideshow
Time Strip

Light effects

During the day, the appearance of the tower relies exclusively on natural sunlight and shadow. To maximize this effect, no other color is present but white. Materiality of the exterior skin has to take into consideration the reduction of reflectivity of large white surfaces under the sharp Greek sun. For this, it has to be textured. The contrasting smooth surface of the external gnomon might display a more absorbent hue, such as light grey.

At night, all edges of the tower are accentuated with white light coming from within. This preserves the characteristic geometry of the building. The intervals between the volumes are lit in a warmer color, such as yellow halogen, both to suggest their depth, as well as to better articulate the white volumes floating above and below. The gnomon wrapped around the additional staircase is lit in a warm colored hue on the inside, that might even change hues during the night, to suggest a particular softness of the architectural surface, where it comes to enclose the staircase and the tower.

Officiating at the Opening Ceremony are (from left to right) Rocco S.K. YIM, Executive Director of Rocco Design Architects Limited; Graham SHEFFIELD, Chief Executive Officer of the Authority; Professor Stephen CHEUNG Yan-leung, Chairman of the Consultation Panel of the Authority; Henry TANG Ying-yen, Chief Secretary for Administration and Chairman of the Board of the Authority; Ronald ARCULLI, Chairman of the Development Committee of the Authority; Spencer de GREY, Senior Partner, Head of Design of Foster + Partners and Rem KOOLHAAS, Partner of Office for Metropolitan Architecture.

The Stage 2 PE exercise will last for three months and run until November 20, 2010, providing the public with the opportunity to review all three options and voice their preference on features for the Authority’s consideration.

At the opening ceremony, the Chairman of the Board of the Authority, Henry Tang Ying-yen, said, “The District is starting to take shape, and the credit should go to our brilliant master planning teams as well as the people of Hong Kong and the arts and cultural stakeholders. Your enthusiasm and invaluable input during Stage 1 of the Public Engagement exercise helped spark the creative processes of these leading architectural teams. Each Conceptual Plan presents a vision of how the District can be developed into a centrepiece for the city – showing off Hong Kong’s unique character, integrating seamlessly with its surroundings, making cultural connections beyond our borders, and becoming a part of our social fabric.”

The three Conceptual Plan Options revealed that day are:

         City Park – prepared by Foster + Partners, led by Lord Norman Foster;

The Consultants’ designs follow the planning design principles laid down by the Authority for the project’s development, which include Creativity, Accessibility, Connectivity, Integration, Vibrancy, Uniqueness and Sustainability. They have also incorporated views received from the people of Hong Kong, including the arts and cultural stakeholders, during the Stage 1 PE exercise which was held from October 2009 to January 2010.

Accompanied by Chief Executive Officer Graham SHEFFIELD (second from left), Henry TANG Ying-yen, Chairman of the Board (first from right), and other guests tour the exhibition of the three Conceptual Plan Options.

Chairman of the Consultation Panel of the Authority, Professor Stephen Cheung, said, “The constructive input received from the Hong Kong people during the Stage 1 PE exercise provided an invaluable source of reference for the Authority and the Conceptual Plan Consultants. Now, we need your help again. The unveiling of the Conceptual Plans is an important milestone in this journey, and we are looking forward to hearing what the public think as we move towards selecting a master plan for the District.”

The questionnaires to be distributed during the Stage 2 PE exercise will ask the public to what extent the Conceptual Plan Options have incorporated the mainstream opinions received during Stage 1 PE. Public views will also be sought on individual attributes of each Conceptual Plan Option, the phasing of the Core Arts and Cultural Facilities, as well as the other arts and cultural facilities and education-related facilities that should be considered.

Views from the exercise will have significant bearings on the Conceptual Plan Option eventually selected by the Authority. In making the selection, the Authority will also consider a basket of criteria: creativity, accessibility, connectivity, integration, vibrancy, uniqueness and sustainability, as well as the technical and financial merits of the Plans and their response in meeting aspirations of arts and culture groups.

Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Graham Sheffield, said, “The Stage 2 PE exercise marks a critical phase when the WKCD begins to transform from abstract to reality. What Hong Kong people think about the plans’ different features will help inform our decision, benefiting not only the WKCD but also future generations of Hong Kong citizens as well as visitors to this great city. We look forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts over the next three months.”

The Conceptual Plan Options will be presented to the public in the form of scale models, interactive 3D models, photomontages and animated videos. They will be available for viewing and comment during a series of exhibitions across the territory, public forums as well as on the Authority’s website. Interested public may also join guided tours to learn more about the three plans.
Dutch studio NL Architects have won a competition to design a stage intended to sit on a breakwater in the river IJ, Amsterdam.

Called Multi Mill, the structure is meant to host performances including theater, film, fashion, sculpture, sound and light art, dance, video and music.

The design consists of three arms extending from a central platform: a screen, stepped seating and a longer catwalk.

A turntable would allow the whole structure to be rotated for different types of event.
Here are some more details from NL Architects:
Competition entry for a cultural facility in Houthavens West, Amsterdam: 1st prize

Cultural Stage

The Port of Amsterdam commissioned Roos Burger & Yvon Yzermans, two collaborating art historians, to develop a cultural facility in Houthavens West. The Port wants to improve the attractiveness of the area to the public by realizing a cultural meeting place in the transforming area between city and port. The idea of NL Architects is to construct a flexible ‘base’ that can facilitate various art forms like: theater, film, fashion, sculpture, sound and light art, dance, video, music… Roos Burger & Yvon Yzermans will curate the outdoor events.

Haparandadam

The ‘object’ will be positioned on the Haparandadam on the banks of the IJ River. Introducing a cultural stage in this vibrant environment is exhilarating: the view is inspiring, the backdrop dynamic. This stretch of land in Amsterdam is so recent that it doesn’t even show up on Google Earth! But the Haparandadam will be ‘on the map’ soon…

Transforming Port

The Port of Amsterdam is in a perpetual process of transformation. Due to scale enlargements harbor activities migrate from east to west – towards the Sea. This opens up large areas for new developments. Beside the already existing port industry the environment becomes more and more a complex ‘urban ecology’.

This implicates an amalgam of functions: living, education, working, culture and leisure. The Houthavens, the former ‘wood port’, now will be turned into a residential area. And of course the creative industry will find an exciting biotope around here. Although this old part of the port is being domesticated, it still forms an ‘edgy’ alternative for the increasingly cultivated inner city. The port is becoming the energetic alter ego of Amsterdam.

Port Transformer

The versatility of the assignment is the ultimate challenge for Architecture: how can one single spatial given host all these functionalities in a credible way?

The sketch consists of three wings that are connected to a central platform. The wings have specific shapes that cater for specific usage. The ‘arms’ can support fashion shows, cinema and theatre. The design will evoke varied programming; besides the evident ways to deploy the object, it hopes to catalyze unexpected ‘inhabitation’. The idea is to develop an adaptable object that can be used both as a stage and as a stand.
Turntable

The design is intended as a revolving structure. The turning multi-form plateau will allow performances with changing backgrounds. The relationship with the context can be changed at will; the view to and from the bowl will be dynamic. By turning the plateau a specific function can be ‘switched on’. As such the square in front of it can be ‘charged’ in different ways.

Square

The location at the tip of the jetty is exciting. It will feature an elevated restaurant in a former offshore radio station; a drop off point for the private cars of skippers; a parking-lot and a turning circle for trucks. The object will activate the fairly large paved area; from a purely functional square it will transform into a cultural stage!

Danish firm ADEPT and Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto have won a competition to design a library for the Högskolan Dalarna university campus in Falun, Sweden.

Called Dalarna Media Arena, the building will feature sloped floors that spiral around the interior.

It will be used by students and teachers at the university as well as the local community, and include a public plaza outside.

ADEPT and Sou Fujimoto collaborated with Topotek1, Rambøll A/S and Bosch & Fjord to create the design.

Completion is expected in 2013.

Here are some more details from ADEPT:

ADEPT WINS SWEDISH MEDIA LIBRARY COMPETITION WITH AMULTIFUNCTIONAL“SPIRAL OF KNOWLEDGE”

Danish ADEPT, Japanese SOU FUJIMOTO Architects and an advisory team consisting of Topotek1, Rambøll A/S and Bosch & Fjord win the competition for a new library in Falun, Sweden, with the project “Dalarna Media Arena”. The project, which consists of a 3000m2 library and an adjoining plaza, is a part of Dalarna University campus.

Dalarna Media Arena is a reinterpretation of the library – a multifunctional event- and knowledge center – targeting students and teachers as well as the local community. Dalarna Media Arena matches a new library culture, staging a wealth of opportunities for events and inspiration. The library and plaza at Högskolan Dalarna will be the city’s third space – a dynamic meeting point with activities for students, employees and visitors.

Click above for larger image

The library is organized as a ”spiral of knowledge”. The sloping terrain continues in a ramp through the building. Wrapping itself the ramp creates a spiral-shaped space – the heart of the building for information seeking and easy orientation. This organization of program creates various learning environments where students can take part in the vibrant life of the library as well as retreat into various study niches. The different sound levels and activities create a diverse and eventful library.

Click above for larger image

The library has its own spatial character in which library and multimedia functions unite and create synergy with the existing university. Wooden facades integrate the building in the surroundings, reflecting the local tradition of using wood as construction material.

Click above for larger image

Dalarna Media Plaza is created in addition to the library – together they form a new landmark for Hogskolan Dalarna. Through a simple reorganization the car park becomes a new surface with ‘islands’ of activities.

Click above for larger image

The programming of the Plaza is flexible and will be developed in the user process. The Plaza, which is a mix of recreational functions and furniture, serves as arrival area and hang-out space for users of Hogskolan, the library and visitors in the area.

Click above for larger image

This project will help to attract people in the neighborhood, thereby anchoring the library in the local community. In addition the ambition is to strengthen the collaboration between regional and international educational and research institutions.

Click above for larger image

With its public functions and activities Dalarna Media Library will become a dynamo in the area and an attraction for both local inhabitants and businesses. Activities in the café, exhibitions, lectures, continuing education, etc. will provide fertile ground for international exchange and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dalarna Media Arena is designed by an international team consisting of ADEPT (DK) and Sou Fujimoto Architects (JP) in collaboration with Rambøll (DK), Topotek1 (DE) and Bosch & Fjord (DK). ADEPT and Sou Fujimoto Architects also joined forces for the Deichmanske Library competition in Oslo, Norway.
The jury minutes stated: “In conclusion it’s an exciting building rich on variety and with many possible meeting points integrated in a coherent environment. The proposal has solved the total program in an interesting, exciting and playful manner – inside as well as outside.”
